JAWAHARLAL NEHRU COLLEGE, DEHRI ON SONE, ROHTAS is a constituent Unit under Veer Kunwar Singh University, Ara, Bihar. It is the Single unit and the only institution all over India whose foundation was laid by our first Prime Minister Late Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru named after his name from his own hands on the memorable day, 17 February 1962. In this sense, it is an unique institution in its origin which is a matter of great glory for all of us. From the township, the college situated nearly 3 K.M. west towards Sasaram adjacent to the Great Grand Trunk Road and near to the Grand Cord Rail Line, in the vicinity of giant Industrial Complex SAHU JAIN group of Industries, Dalmiyanagar.
It is the oldest and the biggest multifaculty co-educational institution of the subdivisional town of Dehri-Dalmiyanagar which imparts both under graduate teaching with Honors in almost all subject and post graduate teaching in Hindi and Economics with experienced teachers and efficient staff always humming with academic activities in the campus.
Dehri-On-Sone is situated on the beautiful bank of river ‘SONE’ which is famous for indigenous and exotic fishes prominently known as Rehu (Labeo Rahita) all over India. From river Sone during rainy season, the spawns and seedlings are transported and exported to almost all parts of India and abroad. The area is highly cultivable and most fertile with abundance of underground water resources in SONE BED. This creates immense opportunities and perennial potentialities for breeding and rearing of various species of fresh water fishes in this area. Under the guidance of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpur (W.B.) by adopting modern methods and advance technology, the area can be enriched in fish population to meet the growing need of protein and vitamins for rich as well as poor alike. Pisciculture may also aid as a subsidiary supplement to the farmer’s income in particular and provide job opportunities to young ones in general.
In J.L.N. College, Dehri On Sone, three years Honors Degree Course in “Industrial Fish & Fisheries” as sponsored by U.G.C. (New Delhi) has commenced from the session 1999-2002. In fact, the college is a proper place for culture, capture like Rehu, Catla, Nain, Common Carp, Silver Carp and Grass Carp are breaded and reared on scientific method. The Campus has its own enough area for construction of additional fish tanks too, if so needed. Besides this, adjacent to the college, there are two well built tanks in the sericulture centre run by the Government of Bihar, which has been handed over to the college. About 7 K.M. south of Dehri, at Indrapuri dam, there is vast area of wet land which is an ideal place for fish rearing. Additionally in the way to the college on the G.T. road, there are a number of ponds and tanks of “Raja fish Farm” (Dillian) built on scientific basis catering to the general needs of the common people which may also provide immense amenities for the augmentation and improvement of the causes of staff and students of this faculty.
